New Introduction!

On a Sunday morning in the summer of 2000 I was walking the rows of our fields,
admiring our plant material and thinking about my son, Samuel. Not entirely
distracted, I noticed a sport amongst a large block of sedum spectabilis ‘Matrona’.
With over a million perennials at our nursery on any given day during the year,
I had noticed and propagated many sports before. I knew immediately
that this one was different. Bearing the dark leaf color of its parent,
the foliage was ringed by creamy-white variegation, the outside edge
of which had a hot pink border. This was a great plant.
 

Four years later, after once fishing our only six cuttings out of the
dumpster, after several times chasing away would-be plant thieves,
after sending a few plants off to Holland with a man I barely knew,
and after countless emails with patent writers, lawyers and plantsmen
around the globe, the patents are in and we are proud to

introduce Sedum spectabilis ‘Samuel Oliphant’.

 

Born the year the plant was discovered, it is named

after Samuel Oliphant Casertano. Oliphant is an

old family name from my wife’s side,

pronounced like elephant with an “o”.

 

We think it is a spectacular plant and look forward to introducing it into
the market place where we know it will be a success.

 

The most satisfying reward from all this hard work,

however, comes when Sam looks out of my office window

and says: “Dad, there’s a plant out there with my name written all over it.”
